3. How is the SSAF calculated?

Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students

For the purposes of the SSAF, the year is divided into two halves:

First half of yearSecond half of year
Enrolment Period 1Enrolment Period 2
  • Semester 1
  • Teaching Period 2
  • Teaching Period 3
  • Teaching Period 4
  • Semester 2
  • Teaching Period 5
  • Teaching Period 6
  • Teaching Period 7

For each enrolment period, the SSAF might be charged as a single lump sum, or the SSAF might be split into several smaller payments.

This depends on when your specific courses are taught (i.e. during semesters or teaching periods).

Example 1

Jack is a full-time psychology student studying on St Lucia campus.

He enrols in 8 units (four courses) for Enrolment Period 1. All of his courses are taught in Semester 1.

His total SSAF for Semester 1 is a single payment of $175 in 2024.

Example 2

Sarah is a full-time MBA student. She enrols in 6 units (three courses) for Enrolment Period 1.

The courses are taught in:

  • Semester 1 (2 units),
  • Teaching Period 2 (2 units), and
  • Teaching Period 4 (2 units).

Her total SSAF for the enrolment period is $175 in 2024, but she pays this amount in two instalments:

2024

  • $130 for Semester 1, and
  • $45 for Teaching Period 4.

Total: $175

The order that you enrol in courses determines how the SSAF is split.

Sarah enrolled in her courses in the following order:

  1. Semester 1 (2 units)
  2. Teaching Period 4 (2 units), and
  3. Teaching Period 2 (2 units)

The fee for a semester is always calculated first and is based on a student's semester enrolment load. This is why Sarah pays the SSAF for Semester 1.

The reason why Sarah pays the remaining SSAF for Teaching Period 4 and not for Teaching Period 2 is because she enrolled in Teaching Period 4 before she enrolled in Teaching Period 2.

Example 3

Daniel is a part-time business student. He enrols in 4 units for Enrolment Period 1.

The courses are taught in:

  • Teaching Period 2 (2 units), and
  • Teaching Period 3 (2 units).

His total SSAF for the enrolment period is $130 in 2024, but he pays this amount in two instalments:

2024

  • $65 for Teaching Period 2, and
  • $65 for Teaching Period 3.

Total: $130

If Daniel were to drop the course taught in Teaching Period 2 before Census Date, he would be charged the entire part-time rate ($130 in 2024) for Teaching Period 3.

Students concurrently enrolled in coursework and HDR programs

If you're concurrently enrolled in a coursework program and an HDR program, you will be charged separately for each research quarter and enrolment period until the maximum annual SSAF charge is reached.

The maximum annual SSAF charge is $351 for 2024.

Example

Second-year medical student also enrolled part time in a PhD
