2. How much do I have to pay?
2025 SSAF amounts
A SSAF of $30 per enrolled unit will be charged, with an annual limit of $365.
This fee applies equally to all students, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and HDR students, regardless of study mode.
SSAF may be charged during any study period, including:
- Semesters (1, 2, and Summer)
- Teaching Periods (2-8)
- Research Quarters (1-4).
Once the limit of $365 is reached, no additional SSAF will be charged until 2026.
2024 SSAF amounts
Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students
The SSAF is calculated according to your:
- mode of attendance (i.e. internal, flexible delivery (FD) or external), and
- study load (i.e. full-time or part-time) in a half-year period.

Internal and flexible delivery students
- Study load is determined by the total number of units you enrol in during a half-year period (i.e. semester study plus non-standard teaching periods).
- If you are enrolled in 6 units or more in a half-year period you will be charged $175 for 2024.
- If you are enrolled in fewer than 6 units in a half-year period, you will be charged $130 for 2024.
- The maximum annual SSAF charge is $351 for 2024.
External students
- External students pay a maximum of $65 in 2024 or per half-year period, whether full-time or part-time.
- To qualify as "external", you must only be enrolled in external courses. If you are undertaking a UQ Abroad exchange semester, any course enrolment in addition to your EXCH courses must also be external.
- If you enrol in an internal course or a flexible delivery course, you are not considered external. You will be charged the same fee as an internal student.
Students enrolled in more than one program
If you are enrolled in more than one coursework program during the same half-year period, you will be charged separately for each program until the maximum SSAF charge is reached for the half-year period.
HDR students
The SSAF is calculated according to your:
- mode of attendance (i.e. internal or remote), and
- study load (i.e. full-time or part-time).

The maximum annual SSAF charge is $351 for 2024. PhD and MPhil students aren't charged a SSAF for enrolling in approved non-award courses.
HDR students enrolled in more than one program
If you are concurrently enrolled in a HDR program and a coursework program, you will be charged separately for each program until the maximum annual SSAF charge is reached.
The maximum annual SSAF charge is $351 for 2024.
