Unique Student Identifier
If you commenced your studies after 1 January 2023, you are required by the Australian Government to provide UQ with a verifiable Unique Student Identifier (USI).
Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your individual education reference number.
It creates an online record of all your nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) training and qualifications, which you can use to create a transcript to show employers and education providers to prove your qualifications and demonstrate pre-requisites for further training.
You need a USI to:
- see your grades when they are released
- enrol in courses for the next semester
- graduate and receive your award, whether you attend your ceremony or not — see USI requirements for graduation.
If you're an international student completing part or all of your studies in Australia, you must provide a verifiable USI before leaving Australia.
Only students who commenced study before 1 January 2023, or will complete all of your studies offshore, may not need to provide a USI. Check if you're exempt from providing a USI.
I'm enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place
If you receive Commonwealth financial assistance, you require a verified USI to maintain your enrolment. Your USI will need to be verified by census date of any semester of study, otherwise your enrolment will be cancelled.
Email the Student Fees team at fees@uq.edu.au if you have any concerns about your USI verification.
Commonwealth financial assistance includes:
- a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
- HECS-HELP assistance
- FEE-HELP assistance
- OS-HELP assistance
- SA-HELP for the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
You only need to create your USI once. You'll keep your USI for life. For more information, see the USI Registry website.
Apply for a USI
It's fast and free to apply for a USI through the USI Registry website.
It's important to note that:
- your first name, last name and date of birth in mySI-net must exactly match the USI Registry — otherwise we won't be able to verify your USI.
- If you’re an international student, you must apply while onshore in Australia, using the details on your Australian Visa and non-Australian passport. If you are currently offshore, please apply once you have landed in Australia, gone through customs and been issued your valid visa.
- once you have a USI, follow our steps for verifying your USI with UQ. Do not select the ‘Provide your USI’ option in the USI Registry Student Portal — USIs submitted through this form won’t be registered by UQ.
Existing USIs
If you have studied a Vocational Education Training (VET) course since 2015, including while at secondary school, you might already have a USI.
Verify your USI with UQ
Once you have created a USI, follow the steps below to update your personal details in mySI-net:
- open mySI-net
- log in to your mySI-net account using your UQ student credentials
- click ‘Personal Details’
- click 'Unique Student Identifier (USI)’
- enter your USI and click ‘save’.
Once you've entered your USI, mySI-net will check your details with the USI registery. The following personal information must be the same in both systems for your USI to be successfully verified:
- first name
- last name
- date of birth
If your details match with the USI Registry a ‘USI Verified’ message will appear next to your USI. Your USI is now verified with UQ.
If your details don't match, a ‘USI Verification Failed’ message will appear next to your USI. If you receive a 'USI verification failed' message, you should check your details before trying to verify your USI again.
Check your verification
Check your personal details
On the ‘Personal details’ page of mySI-net, you’ll be able to see which details don’t match with the USI Registry.
Please check for any errors in your first name, last name and date of birth on mySI-net and the USI Registry. You may need to update your details before you can resubmit your USI for verification.
If you have any questions regarding USI verification, or need help updating your personal details, contact Student Central.
International students
You will create your USI using the details on your Australian Visa and non-Australian passport.
If your non-Australian passport has a single name, your Australian visa may show:
- the single name duplicated under both your first and last name
- ‘no name’ under last name.
For your USI to be verified, your legal name in mySI-net must match the legal name on your Australian visa.
Domestic students
Your Commonwealth support might be affected if your mySI-net details don’t match the information held by both the USI Registry and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Check your information is up to date with the ATO before making any changes in mySI-net.
Update your personal details with UQ
If your legal name in mySI-net does not match your legal name with the USI Registry or ATO, submit a name change request below. You’ll need to provide a scan or photograph of current and original documents that confirm your identity.
Prepare for graduation
To be eligible for conferral and receive your degree, diploma or certificate, you must meet all your program and enrolment requirements. This includes providing a verifiable USI to UQ.
For most UQ students, conferral occurs at the graduation ceremony (whether you attend or not).
If you are close to finishing your program, please refer to the UQ graduation website for dates and further information.
International students
Unless you're exempt from submitting a USI, you'll need to verify your USI in order to graduate. Remember, you can only apply for your USI when you're onshore in Australia.
Refer to your graduation correspondence for the last date to provide your USI before conferral. If you are currently offshore and will not return to Australia by this date, email graduations@uq.edu.au.
If you will be onshore in Australia by this date, follow the steps to:
