New Year cyber resolutions
The start of a new year is an ideal time to reflect on the safety of your personal and professional information. With online threats continuing to rise, staying secure has never been more important.
Small, simple changes can make a big difference to your online safety. Below are ten New Year’s cyber resolutions to consider to boost your security in the year ahead, and help keep both yourself and UQ safe.

A strong password is long, difficult to guess and unique. Learn more about using secure passwords. Check if your accounts have been compromised by searching your email addresses on https://haveibeenpwned.com/. Change your password/s on any accounts that have been compromised.
2. Recognise and report suspicious emails

4. Store files and data securely
Choose an appropriate storage location that meets your needs, and also complies with UQ and regulatory requirements. Read more about protecting your files and sharing sensitive information (UQ staff login required).
5. Lock your devices and update software regularly
Always lock your devices when leaving them unattended, and run regular software updates. Restart your UQ computer at least once per week so automatic software updates can be installed. Read more about protecting your UQ device.
6. Only use approved UQ software
Ensure that all software used for academic, research and administrative use is UQ approved. Unregulated software can be used to deploy malware. View the UQ software catalogue.
7. Update your social media privacy settings
Review your social media privacy settings and increase them as needed. Read more about protecting your personal details.
8. Stay up to date with training
