Renting in Queensland
Whether you're looking at student accommodation close to campus or finding a private rental to live in, here's what you need to know about renting in Queensland.
1. Research your options
Types of accommodation
When you're ready to start, think about the type of accommodation that will suit you. Do you want to live alone or are you keen to live with fellow students?
Visit our UQ Living site to learn more about our on-campus residential colleges, discover off-campus living in purpose-built student accommodation, or explore private rentals.
We've also suggested some short-term options if you're looking for somewhere to live temporarily.
Accommodation close to campus
Our campuses are located in St Lucia, Herston, Dutton Park and Gatton. There are plenty of accommodation options available nearby, or in surrounding suburbs.
St Lucia
St Lucia offers a diverse mix of apartment living and large residential homes, all nestled along the Brisbane River. The suburb is home to a range of riverside parks and walks, and shopping villages with supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurant and takeaway options. Public transport options include bus and ferry – and it's an easy commute to campus.
Nearby suburbs include Toowong, West End, Indooroopilly and Taringa. Across the river, Dutton Park, Fairfield, Annerley, East Brisbane and Woolloongabba are also close by – you'll need to make a short trip across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge to get to campus.
Herston
If you'll be studying at our Herston campus, your local areas will be Herston and Kelvin Grove.
Herston is home to the largest hospital in Queensland – the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital – and the suburb has long attracted residents from Brisbane's medical community.
Kelvin Grove has a thriving student population (there's a QUT campus located in the suburb) and offers an affordable range of housing options. Kelvin Grove Urban Village is a popular destination for food and shopping and has a combination of apartments, restaurants, retail and cultural facilities.
Dutton Park
Our Dutton Park campus sits next to the Princess Alexandra Hospital and is home to our growing health, biomedical and environmental sciences research sector.
Dutton Park is surrounded by Woolloongabba, East Brisbane, Annerley and Fairfield, and across the river from St Lucia (just over the Eleanor Schonell Bridge).
It's also a short trip on public transport to the Brisbane CBD and South Bank, close to many local food options, parks and bikeways, op shops (second-hand clothing and homeware shops) and gift shops at Stone's Corner and Annerley.

Gatton
UQ's Gatton campus is situated 5km east of Gatton, a major agricultural town in the Lockyer Valley.
Gatton is the business hub of the Lockyer Valley and has various dining options, sports and recreational facilities, retail stores, cultural sites, and essential services. The atmosphere in town is laid back, with a strong community focus.
Other popular towns in the area include Laidley, Plainland, Forest Hill and College View.
