Under the Academic Progression Procedure, there are required levels of academic progress you are expected to meet. If your Academic Progress isn’t at the level it should be, you may receive a Progression Alert or Progression Intervention Notice.

We understand there can be many challenges that impact your progress, and we’re here to support you.

This is a great time to engage with UQ support services and your faculty about your studies and any difficulties you may be experiencing.

Keep reading to learn more about:

  • what it means to receive a Progression Alert or Progression Intervention notice and the actions to take now
  • what you need to know as an international student (impacts to your student visa)
  • what is included in the Academic Progression Procedure and how Academic Standing is determined.

For students enrolled in Schedule A programs

If you are a student enrolled in a Schedule A program, you can be identified as not meeting the requirements of the Academic Progression Procedure and your program-specific academic progression requirements.

For students enrolled in Schedule B programs

If you are a student enrolled in a Schedule B program, you can only be identified as not meeting your program-specific academic progression requirements. The requirements of the Academic Progression Procedure will not apply to you.

2. Receiving a Progression Intervention Notice

After receiving a Progression Intervention Notice, you will have 20 business days to submit a Progression Improvement Plan.

Progression Intervention Notices will be sent to your student email account from the Academic Registrar or the Associate Dean (Academic).

These notices are an important way for us to check in with you about your studies to help you identify why you aren't meeting the required levels of academic progress and what resources and support you need to get back on track. To guide this process, you will be required to submit a Progression Improvement Plan (PIP).

For more information on academic progression requirements, go to Understanding academic progression.

If your grades change after receiving a Progression Intervention Notice

If you have requested a re-mark or applied for supplementary assessment or a deferred exam, your grades and Academic Standing may change.

If your Academic Standing changes to meet the required levels of academic progress, UQ will notify you that your Progression Intervention Notice no longer applies. Unless you have received this notice, you must still submit your Progression Improvement Plan by the due date.

Actions to take now

Prepare your Progression Improvement Plan

To ensure your Progression Improvement Plan (PIP) is completed and ready to submit within 20 business days, the most important thing to do is start now.

We recommend going to our guide for how to write your Progression Improvement Plan, which will provide tips to help you:

  • identify the reason why you aren’t meeting the required level of academic progress
  • provide relevant supporting documentation and evidence
  • identify practical steps you have already taken and are planning to take to improve your academic performance
  • find who to contact for support.

The Progression Improvement Plan page also has information on where you can go for support, how to submit your plan, the outcomes you can expect, and the appeal process.

After submitting your PIP, you can maintain provisional enrolment until an outcome is reached. This includes adding courses, paying all fees and charges, attending required learning activities, and undertaking all assessment.

Plan for your future success

Receiving a Progression Intervention Notice is also an opportunity to reflect on how you are feeling about your current program and your studies overall. If you decide to take a temporary break or change your program, here's what you'll need to consider:

Taking a break (interruption of studies)

If you’re considering taking an interruption, please contact your faculty before the Progression Improvement Plan submission date. The requirements and process vary for international and domestic students, and for students in particular programs.

You will still need to submit a Progression Improvement Plan to return to your studies. The due dates to submit are 5 January to re-enrol in Semester 1, or 30 June to re-enrol in Semester 2.

For more information, go to Retention of place and interruption of studies.

Changing your program

If you have been issued a Progression Intervention Notice and wish to change programs, you must still submit your Progression Improvement Plan by the due date. Go to the Changing programs page for more information and important dates.
