9. Requesting a confidential examination

If your thesis needs legal protection beyond a normal level of confidentiality (for example, because your thesis may be legally sensitive, give rise to a patent, or have contractual obligations), you should request a confidential examination on the HDR Thesis Examination request.

Your principal advisor and Director of Higher Degree Research need to approve this request. If your request is approved, your examiners will be asked to sign a legally binding Confidentiality Agreement.

More information about confidential examination is in section 2.0 of the Higher Degree by Research Examination Policy.

Requesting a confidential examination does not automatically embargo your thesis. Make sure you discuss thesis embargo with your advisory team before submission if that is required.
