International students need a valid visa to study at UQ. If your student visa is due to expire soon, you will need to:

  1. Apply to extend your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  2. Apply for a new Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from UQ.
  3. Apply to renew your student visa through the Department of Home Affairs.

We recommend applying for a new CoE at least 3 months before your visa is due to expire. You need proof of OSHC before you apply for your new CoE. Once you have your new CoE, you can then apply to renew your student visa.

If you are currently offshore and do not know if you have a valid CoE, or if you are unsure if you need to apply for a new CoE, Please click here for information regarding your CoE status.

If you're a HDR candidate and you've recently submitted your thesis, you do not need to provide a new CoE while your thesis is under examination. More information is available from the Department of Home Affairs.

Extending your Overseas Student Health Cover

You are required to hold sufficient OSHC for the duration of your student visa.

Before we provide you with a new CoE, we must be satisfied that you have OSHC coverage for the period in which you're wanting to extend your visa. You'll need to upload a copy of your OSHC Certificate of Insurance when you apply for a new CoE.

Make sure you arrange your OSHC coverage according to the Department of Home Affairs guidelines

Applying for a new Confirmation of Enrolment

Apply online

Applications are only approved if they meet strict eligibility criteria

Before you submit the online form, make sure you carefully read all instructions and attach evidence to support your application. Relevant evidence might include:

  • a medical certificate (if you were sick)
  • emails or correspondence from the University, or
  • a statement from a relevant authority.

If your application is approved, the relevant school or faculty, or the Graduate School, will arrange for a new CoE.

An email will be sent to your student account when your new CoE has been issued, along with instructions about how to renew your student visa through the Department of Home Affairs.
