Accessing ArcGIS
ArcGIS is available free-of-charge on UQ-owned computers for UQ staff and students.
You can use the Microsoft Software Center to install the application on ITS managed UQ computers. Contact your local IT support team or submit an IT request to install ArcGIS on other UQ-owned computers.
ArcGIS Online is also available to staff and students. To sign in, visit the UQ ArcGIS Online sign in page, click the blue bar marked 'The University of Queensland', then sign in with your UQ username and password.
If you need to sign in to ArcGIS Online from ArcGIS Pro, the organization URL is https://uqmaps.maps.arcgis.com.
Home use
- Staff: you can use ArcGIS on one privately owned computer at your primary residence only for the purpose of “learning, becoming proficient with and developing curricula or research expertise around the programs.” For field work, you must use a UQ-owned system for UQ purposes only.
- Students: you can use ArcGIS on your own private computer for no charge for study purposes for a subject you are enrolled in.
Staff and students can download ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro for home use at UQ Software Licensing. No licence key is required - users will need to connect to the UQ licence server to obtain a licence for the software. This will require a VPN connection, however, licences can then be borrowed for up to 30 days of offline usage.
Installation instructions can be found in the download portal on the UQ Software Licensing website.
ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro are also available online on the UQ Digital Workspace. This enables students to use it from any device with internet access, without needing to install the software.
Course coordinators can request access for their course by submitting an IT request.
RHD students can submit an IT request for access.
The installation for home use contains:
- ArcInfo
- 3D Analyst
- Data Interoperability
- Geostatistical Analyst
- Network Analyst
- Publisher
- Schematics
- Spatial Analyst
- Tracking Analyst
- ArcScan
- Maplex.
Conditions of use
ArcGIS can be used at UQ for academic and research purposes only. The Esri ArcGIS site licence is centrally funded for UQ organisational units, staff and students for use at UQ sites and on UQ-owned equipment. The licence is renewed annually on 1 August.
Use of ArcGIS outside Australia is restricted. Submit an IT request to discuss use outside Australia.
You can download and read the ESRI Licence Terms and Conditions (UQ login required) (PDF, 413.6 KB).
