Microsoft software
Microsoft software products are available for UQ staff and students on UQ computers, with some products available for personal devices.
Microsoft products are centrally funded and covered by several different licence agreements. Most of these products can be used free-of-charge on UQ-owned computers.
Available software
Microsoft software products include Microsoft 365, Office 365, the Windows operating systems and software development products.
Microsoft 365 and Office 365
Microsoft 365 is an integrated productivity and collaboration suite available online and via desktop and mobile apps. The suite includes:
- Microsoft Office applications (e.g Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- collaboration tools (e.g. Teams and Planner)
- cloud services (e.g. OneDrive cloud storage).
Microsoft 365 for work use (students and staff)
Microsoft 365 is a full cloud and software service that provides UQ students and staff access to most up-to-date applications and services from Microsoft via the web, desktop and mobile.

Office 365 for personal use (students and staff)
Office 365 is a smaller package of cloud and software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Students and staff can access a free version of Office 365 for personal use on their own devices through UQ.

Installing Microsoft software on UQ computers
If you are using a computer managed by ITS, you can use the Microsoft Software Centre to install Microsoft software.
For all other computers, contact your local IT support team or submit an IT request.
Purchasing other Microsoft products
Some Microsoft products are not included in the licensing agreement. You can purchase the following products for specific UQ computers through UQeMarket:
- Project Standard
- Project Professional
- Project Server and Client Access Licences (CALs)
- SQL Server Standard
- Visio Standard
- Visio Professional
- Visual Studio Pro.
Licences for these products are perpetual (ongoing), do not include upgrades and allow installation on one computer.
Contact your Finance Professional Services team for help and include these details in the UniFi order:
- name of the user
- phone number
- computer name.
Submit an IT request for software assurance (product maintenance) and MSDN subscriptions.
Conditions of use
Microsoft software can be used under UQ licences for UQ academic, administrative and research purposes only.
Software covered by UQ's agreements with Microsoft is available to UQ organisational units whose staff are considered full-time equivalent in the count submitted to the Australian Government each year.

UQ-affiliated organisations not listed here cannot use Microsoft software under a UQ licence.
Home use by eligible staff is for academic, administrative and research purposes and is limited to work-related and skills development purposes when using the software on home computers.
Microsoft software offered through UQ cannot be used for commercial or business purposes. You can also read the:
