Credit for previous study
Have you studied before? You may be eligible to receive credit for – or exemption from – certain courses in your program.
First things first: if you're a study abroad or incoming exchange student, or any kind of non-award student, you're not allowed to apply for credit or exemptions. Sorry about that.
Also, if you're an international student, you may have already received block credit with your offer letter. Specific credit will be confirmed by your faculty when you start. Check your offer letter and contact your faculty with any questions.
If you’re unsure what credit or exemptions you may be eligible for, see our advice for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Applying for credit or exemptions
You can apply for credit or exemptions up to 2 weeks before the start of semester, but we recommend applying as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, we aren't able to process late applications. If you miss the deadline for this semester, you might be able to apply at the beginning of next semester.
How you apply depends on the previous study you've completed:
International Baccalaureate (IB) study – complete the credit or exemption for IB students application form (PDF, 218.5 KB) and submit it to Student Central.
TAFE or study at another university – use the online form (student login required) to request credit or exemptions. Watch the video to learn how to complete the online form.
UQ study – see our advice on transferring credit between UQ programs.
If you apply online (student login required), you can submit additional requests for credit or exemptions on the same form by using the 'Add request' button.
Detailed information about applying for credit or exemptions can be found in the Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.
