BioRender is an online app used to create, edit, and collaborate on scientific diagrams and illustrations. It offers a large library of images to use in the creation of scientific posters, presentations, and publications.

Accessing BioRender

In most cases, a free educational licence will be suitable for UQ staff and students.

The free educational licence is available to all UQ staff and students. To obtain a licence, visit the BioRender website, then select the 'Sign Up' option and fill in your details. Most UQ users should find the free licence suitable. All undergraduate students who use BioRender for classwork must sign up to use the free option.

A limited number of premium subscription licences are available. The premium licence option is available only to staff and HDR students under the specific following conditions:

  • If the staff member or HDR student is close to publishing a paper or journal article that requires the high resolution BioRender images for licensing purposes.
  • You are a staff member teaching a BioRender class and require a premium licence.

HDR students requesting a premium BioRender licence require and email from their supervisor outlining their intention to submit for publication to a journal. Once the HDR student has obtained the necessary approval, please submit an IT request for a premium licence with a copy of the supervisor’s email authorisation attached.

Frazer Institute users

The Frazer Institute have their own departmental licence for BioRender. This licence is only available for Frazer Institute staff and students. For further information, please contact the Frazer Institute.

For any licensing queries related to the Frazer Institute only, contact fi.enquiries@uq.edu.au.

Premium licence administration

Due to the limited number of premium licences available, the accounts of premium licence holders will be deactivated if their account has not been accessed for a period of 3 months (90 days). Users removed from the premium licence will retain access to the BioRender portal via a free account. Users must sign up for the free account using the same login details. This will enable the user to access their data via the free account.

If you require the premium account again and meet the above criteria, please submit an IT request.

Support
