Consent is at the core of all healthy, safe and respectful relationships.
Understanding consent
In Australia, it’s illegal to have sex with anyone without their consent. Everyone has the right to decide if, when, how, where, and with whom they want to have sex.
These decisions around sex can change over time and even during sex, so it is important to check in with your partner/s often to make sure you are all having fun and consent to the interaction.
Everyone plays a role in making sure UQ is a safe campus. It’s everyone’s responsibility to understand what consent is, and how to talk about it with your partner/s.

Respectful relationships
Respecting your partner and their consent is an important part of a healthy relationship.
A healthy relationship also includes:
- feeling happy, respected and safe.
- having the freedom to make decisions about your own body, who you see and when you see them, how to spend your money, how you express yourself, and decisions relating to your cultural and spiritual practices.
- engaging in respectful and honest communication, and active listening
- accepting and feeling safe saying ‘no’.
