VMware provides computer virtualisation software. UQ’s licence agreement with VMware is through the Council of Australasian Directors of Information Technology (CAUDIT).

The agreement includes:

  • vRealize Suite Advanced
  • VMware NSX Advanced
  • vCenter Server Standard
  • vSphere Enterprise Plus
  • Site Discovery Manager.

VMWare Infrastructure 3, Enterprise Edition is also available, including:

  • ESX Server, VMFS (Virtual Machine File System)
  • Virtual SMP
  • VirtualCenter Agent
  • VMotion
  • DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler)
  • High Availability
  • Consolidated Backup
  • vCenter Server 2 Standard (including vCenter Converter 3.0 Enterprise).

VMWare Fusion Pro for macOS and VMware Workstation for x64 versions of Windows and Linux are not included in the centrally funded licence. VMware Fusion Pro can be purchased through UQeMarket. You can request a quote for VMWare Workstation.

Personal Use licences of VMware Fusion Player and VMware Workstation Player cannot be used on UQ-owned devices.

Accessing VMware

The included VMware products are available for free on UQ computers and UQ affiliate-owned computers for UQ staff and third-party contractors of:

  • UQ
  • Translational Research Institute (TRI)
  • Colleges' Information Technology Group (CITG)
  • Uniquest Ptd Ltd
  • The University of Queensland Union College
  • Emmanuel College
  • St Leo’s College
  • Cromwell College
  • Duchesne College
  • Grace College
  • International House
  • King's College
  • St John’s College
  • The Women’s College
  • University of Queensland Union.

The licence is a 3-year agreement that is renewed and paid for on 1 April every year. Products included in the agreement may change each time it's renewed.

To request a VMware licence and installation, ask your organisational unit’s desktop support team to submit an IT request. The request should include:

  • what products you want installed
  • how many licences you need
  • the total number of physical computers.

VMWare Horizon Client, used for the UQ Digital Workspace, can be installed for free on any UQ or personal device.

Home use

Students may be eligible to use a free VMware Fusion Player Personal Use Licence on their home computer for personal use. For further details see the Licensing and Registration section of the Fusion Player FAQ.

Staff can't use VMware Fusion Player Personal Use licences to work from home.

Conditions of use

VMware products can be used at UQ for internal business purposes only.

The details of the agreement with CAUDIT and VMware are commercial-in-confidence and cannot be discussed with anyone who is not a UQ employee or third-party contractors.
