FileMaker is a relational database application that allows drop and drag creation and manipulation of databases. It is available for Microsoft Windows and macOS.

Accessing FileMaker

You can use FileMaker if you are a UQ student or staff member using a UQ-owned computer. Submit an IT request to have FileMaker installed.

You need to purchase (or arrange for a staff member to purchase) a FileMaker product licence through UniFi. Ask your local finance officer for help and include the name of the user, phone number and computer name on your order. You can order:

  • FileMaker Pro: find on UniFi using ‘FMPRO’, $50 per year
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced: find on UniFi using ‘FMPROADV’, $132 per year
  • FileMaker Server and connections: find on UniFi using ‘FMSVRPLUS’, submit an IT request for a quote.

All prices will be confirmed when you order and are prorated to the standard licence end date for all of UQ. Prices don’t include GST but will be applied during the order period to any items ordered by organisational units and affiliated bodies not covered by UQ’s Australian Business Number.

Home use

You may be able to use FileMaker at home or on a personal computer if you’re a UQ staff member. Submit an IT request to find out if you can. Students can’t use FileMaker at home using a UQ licence.

Conditions of use

FileMaker can be used at UQ for academic, administrative and research purposes on UQ-owned computers. You will need a licence for every device you use as concurrent use of licences is not allowed.

FileMaker licences are renewed annually on 20 July.

UQ currently uses FileMaker 16 and you are entitled to upgrade to this version free-of-charge if you already use FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Pro Advanced or FileMaker Server. You can also continue to use your current version.

All versions of FileMaker after 12 have a different file format which is not backwards compatible with earlier versions of FileMaker.
