Discuss your computing needs with your Principal Advisor. Choose carefully, thinking about what you will need over the course of your candidature. This scheme will provide one computer only and cannot accommodate swaps or upgrades if you change your mind.
You should consider the software compatibility or computing power requirements of your project. You should also consider any School/Centre IT infrastructure requirements, including org unit preference for laptops vs. desktops; mobility vs ergonomics; the availability or need for peripherals for laptops; and particularly if the computer will be located or used in facilities or on networks not operated by UQ.
Option 1: HDR Laptop option (laptop only/standard laptop)
The standard staff/student laptop, fully funded from the Faculty’s HDR computer scheme. Set-up and deployment should be possible within 1-2 weeks. Keywords: UQ Laptop Standard; Model Dell Latitude 5440. Models vary over time but currently have the following specifications:

- LAN and wireless connectivity
- This option includes the laptop only, without docking station or peripherals.
Option 2: HDR Desktop option (All-in-One AIO)
The standard staff/student desktop All‐in‐One (AIO), fully funded from the Faculty’s HDR computer scheme. Set-up and deployment should be possible within 4-5 weeks. An AIO houses the computer and screen in one unit. Suitable if you don’t need mobility or want better ergonomics when separate peripherals are not available. Keywords: UQ Standard Desktop All-in-One; Model Lenovo M90a AIO. Models vary over time but currently have the following specifications:
- i5 CPU; 16GB RAM; 512GB SSD
- Onboard video card

Option 3: HDR Laptop plus desk accessory package option
This is the Laptop in option 1 plus 1 24” monitor, a dock, keyboard and mouse. Ordering, supplier delivery, UQ ITS set-up and deployment should be possible within 1-2 weeks. The HDR student computing support scheme will subsidise this to the cost of the laptop only, and the advisor will need to meet the balance of cost, currently approximately $560 extra. You will need to know your cost centre (chart string) when completing the request form.
Option 4: Any other option from the UQeMarket catalogue
Standard computing items in the UQeMarket are listed under the “ICT supply arrangements” section of the ICT Procurement page. Ordering, supplier delivery, UQ ITS set-up and deployment should be possible from approximately 2 weeks to 2 months. The HDR student computing support scheme will subsidise this to the cost of our laptop or desktop options (as relevant), and the advisor will need to meet the balance of costs. You will need to know the keywords, model and pricing (instructions here), as well as your cost centre (chart string) when completing the request form.
Option 5: Non-Standard ITS item that is not in the UQeMarket catalogue
Any items that are not part of the UQeMarket catalogue require ITS approval before they can be ordered and delivered – a separate process to the HDR student computing support scheme request. Ordering, supplier delivery, UQ ITS set-up and deployment may take 2-3 months.
- See the “Non-standard purchases and custom quotes” section of the ITS Purchasing desktops, laptops and tablets page.
- Request a custom quote and/or lodge a request to purchase a non-standard computer (staff login required).
- If ITS approve the purchase, use the HDR Student Computing Support Request form (below) to seek funding from the Faculty for us to order the item.
- The HDR student computing support scheme will subsidise the cost of our laptop or desktop options (as relevant), and the advisor will need to meet the balance of costs. You will need to upload the ITS approval and quotes, as well as your cost centre (chart string), when completing the request form.
