Why study the Bachelor of Economics?
The study of economics is central to an understanding of business, markets, trade, government policies, international issues, globalisation, health, development, and the environment. This program is for students intending to become analysts, advisors, and economists in the public and private sectors and leads to careers in business, finance, international development, health, human resource management, marketing, management and research.
The UQ School of Economics is Queensland's largest, most experienced and influential economics school. What you can do with a Bachelor of Economics
Careers
Graduates work in a range of fields including international consulting; infrastructure development and planning; environmental management; international finance; investment and trade; natural resource and agricultural economics; public health; treasury and statistics.
Employment opportunities exist in the following: Education - universities and secondary schools; Financial institutions, stockbroking firms and merchant banks; International organisations (Asian Development Bank, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Health Organisation) providing policy advice and expertise for economic development and infrastructure projects; Private sector multinational corporations and local firms; Public sector government departments and agencies (local, State and Federal) in economic policy, regulation, finance or public accounting; Public utilities in the fields of transport, communications and power supply; Specialists/consultants in training and management development, business law, industrial relations, or information technology; Specialist organisations such as industry associations, management consultancies, market research/advertising organisations, and trade unions.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Economics
To complete the Bachelor of Economics
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Economics, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain 48 units from the BEcon course list, comprising -
- 22 units of compulsory courses from Group 1; and either
-
(i) Students who wish to complete a major:
- 12 units from one major in Group 2 (at least 6 units must be from level 3 courses); and
- 6 units from Group 3 with no more than 4 units of non-ECON coded courses; and
- 8 units of general elective courses from Group 3 or from almost any other undergraduate program in the University as approved by the Executive Dean; or
- (ii) Students who do not wish to complete a major:
- at least 18 units of elective courses from Group 3 with no more than 4 units of non-ECON coded courses; and
- up to 8 units of general elective courses from Group 3 or from almost any other undergraduate program in the University as approved by the Executive Dean.
At least 8 units must be at level 3 and no more than 8 units can be at level 1 excluding Group 1 courses.
