All first-year nursing and midwifery students must complete mandatory patient handling training before commencing clinical placements. This training has two components:

  • Attendance at one 2-hour in-person patient handling session
  • Completion of two online e-learning modules

The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work offers in-person patient handling sessions in early February (10, 11 and 12 February) and during Orientation Week (19 and 20 February). These sessions are 2-hours in duration with start times of 8am, 10am, 1pm and 3pm. Enrolled students will be invited to self-select a session; however, places are limited. Only students who have registered for a specific timeslot will be permitted to attend that session.

Students will receive an email from the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Education Team with instructions on how to register for a session and details about attendance requirements. These emails will be sent progressively from late January.

If you are unable to attend an offered patient handling session, or if you do not attend your allocated session, you must independently arrange and complete patient handling competency training before attending any clinical placement.

Additional orientation sessions for nursing and midwifery students are detailed here.
