The Dean’s Award for Outstanding Higher Degree by Research Theses gives formal recognition to outstanding PhD and MPhil graduates whose theses have been independently assessed as outstanding by their external thesis examiners.

The award is based on examiners’ written feedback during the thesis examination, prior to the oral examination. To receive the Dean’s Award, both examiners must have rated the thesis as “well above expectations” for each of five thesis quality assessment categories:

  1. The thesis demonstrated an original contribution to the generation and/or application of knowledge

  2. The thesis engaged with the literature and the works of others

  3. The thesis showed an advanced knowledge of research principles and methods relating to the applicable discipline

  4. There is clear and discernible coherence in the presented research, its arguments, and conclusion

  5. The thesis is convincingly written
