AHPRA registration

What is AHPRA registration?

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to ensure the community has access to a safe health workforce across all professions registered under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. AHPRA’s role is to protect the public and set standards and policies that all registered health practitioners must meet.

The following information applies to all postgraduate students in the programs listed in the table below who are required to hold AHPRA registration while participating in Work Integrated Learning/Placements in their discipline area.

Undergraduate students are not required to apply for AHPRA registration as this is arranged on their behalf by the HMBS Faculty.

You can view your registration status at any time by checking the register of practitioners.

AHPRA general registration process for students

Relevant for UQ students enrolling or enrolled in Master of Physiotherapy (Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy) and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry.

AHPRA provisional registration process for students

Relevant for UQ students enrolling or enrolled in Doctor of Psychology, Master of Psychology, Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology, or Master of Organisational Psychology programs of study, completing the Higher degree supervised practice pathway to general registration as a Psychologist.

AHPRA limited registration process for international students

Relevant for international practitioners enrolling at UQ in the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry or Master of Physiotherapy (Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy) who do not qualify for general registration.

To enable practitioners to undertake postgraduate training or supervised practice. The key requirement of limited registration – training/supervised practice is that the relevant Board (e.g. Dental Board of Australia) must be satisfied that the practitioner has completed a qualification that is relevant to, and suitable for, postgraduate training or supervised practice in Australia.

Application time

Up to 8 weeks to finalise registration dependent on the time of year.

Process

Student creates an account with AHPRA.
Student completes their online application.
Student pays any fees and submits application.
Student confirms general registration, expiry date and registration number via InPlace.
HMBS Placement Ready team verifies registration status and updates InPlace.

Renewing AHPRA general registration

If you have existing general registration you need to update your InPlace profile with your AHPRA registration number and expiry date.

If you need to renew your general registration you can do this online via the Online Services section of the AHPRA website. Once you have received your registration you need to update your InPlace profile with your AHPRA registration number and expiry date.

Application time

Up to 8 weeks to finalise registration dependent on the time of year.

Students applying must have completed an accredited sequence of study in Psychology as approved by the Psychology board

Process

Student creates an account with AHPRA.
Student completes their online application.
Student pays any fees and submits application.
Student confirms general registration, expiry date and registration number via InPlace.
HMBS Placement Ready team verifies registration status and updates InPlace.

Provisional registration is granted for one year from the date your application is approved. You will need renew each year while undertaking your supervised practice program (e.g. a higher degree or an internship).

AHPRA and the HMBS Placement Ready Team will both send you an email reminder when it is time to renew. To ensure you receive the reminders from AHPRA, add AHPRA to your safe senders list in your email account. AHPRA aren’t required to send you a reminder so, ultimately, it is your responsibility to ensure you renew on time.

Renewing AHPRA provisional registration

Provisional Registration renewal can be completed online via the AHPRA Psychology Board website. If you have existing general registration you need to update your InPlace profile with your AHPRA registration number and expiry date.

AHPRA recommend lodging your application for provisional registration renewal at least two months before your expiry date to ensure your study or internship is not disrupted.

You won’t incur any application fees, you’ll just pay the annual provisional registration fee (so it’s the same cost as renewing).

Renewal applications can be submitted online or via APRO-76 - Application for provisional registration lodged with your local AHPRA office.

Apply or renew AHPRA limited registration (international students)

Application time

Once received, up to 8 weeks to finalise registration dependent on the time of year.

Pro-rata fees available depending on how many months you will be registered.

Students applying must be an international student, with overseas qualifications relevant for applying for postgraduate training in Australia in their discipline area.

Process

Student creates an account with AHPRA.
Student completes a paper application for limited registration and sends relevant supporting documents and payment details by mail/post.
Student provides registration details, expiry date and their registration number to InPlace.
HMBS Placement Ready team verifies registration status and updates InPlace.

If you have existing Limited registration you need to update your InPlace profile with your AHPRA registration number and expiry date.

Please note there isn’t a drop down item for "Do you have current AHPRA Registration?". For limited registration, but you must choose an option in order to submit your documents to InPlace. Please choose ‘Provisional’ and add a comment in the comments section below to comfirm "limited registration".

Registration forms are available on the appropriate discipline board websites. Forms and payment must be posted to AHPRA as stated on the form.
