What is patient handling training?

From Semester 1 2024, all first-year nursing and midwifery students will be required to complete mandatory patient handling training before starting placements. There are 2 components to completing the training:

attending an in-person patient handling session
completing 2 e-learning modules.

You will receive an email from the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Education Team with details about your patient handling sessions and attendance details. This email will be sent incrementally towards the end of January.

If you're unable to attend your session, you will need to self-source your patient handling competency before attending clinical placement.

Completing the modules

Step 1

Login to iLearn. If you don’t have an iLearn account yet, you can register for an iLearn account. Under "account types", please select "student on clinical placement".

Please enter the following details when you register for an iLearn account:

Please ensure your email address identifies your organisation (e.g. learning institution) rather than a personal email address.

Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser for accessing iLearn.

Step 2

Complete the following mandatory training modules and assessments:

Keeping You Safe
(DoH-Corp-C) Patient Handling Fundamentals
- Module 1: Risk Management
- Module 2: Individual patient handling risk assessment

Step 3

Download your iLearn transcript.

Submitting your evidence

Step 1

Access InPlace and open the My Details submissions page. Locate the section titled "Patient Handling - Practical and Online Learning Requirements". There are two attributes - the first is for the practical workshop, UQ staff will upload date of completion on your behalf once the workshop has been completed.

Step 2

Upload your iLearn transcript to the second attribute by the due date.

Upload your iLearn transcript to the 'N&M – Patient Handling Fundamentals' attribute in InPlace by the due date.

UQ will then verify your certificates.
