First aid and CPR training

Some HMBS placement providers require that students must have current first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates.

First aid: 1 day, approximately $130, valid for 3 years

CPR: 5 hours, approximately $80, valid for 12 months

First aid and CPR training must include the following topics:

apply the principles of first aid
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults and infants
asthma and anaphylaxis management
treatment of infection, shock, fractures, bleeding and burns
emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold, heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
management of common medical emergencies
treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings.

Accredited course codes which include these topics are HLTAID011 (first aid) and HLTAID009 (CPR). You must look for these course codes when booking into a course.

Courses must include a practical, in-person component. Online certifications will not be accepted.

We recommend that international students complete first aid and/or CPR training in Australia to ensure that your training meets our requirements.

Following the completion of first aid and CPR courses, certificates should be submitted to InPlace and uploaded to the appropriate attribute for record keeping and compliance.

Complete first aid and CPR training

Step 1: Get an Australian Government Unique Student Identifier

Accredited providers will require you to have an Australian Government Unique Student Identifier (this is not the same as your UQ student ID number) so that they can record completion of your training. If you don’t already have a USI, you can create one.

Step 2: Complete the training

Find an accredited training provider

When undertaking first aid and/or CPR training in Australia, you should check that the provider is an accredited and recognised training organisation.

Your first aid and CPR certificates

First aid and CPR certificates must:

be in English
clearly state whether both first aid and CPR training was included
include confirmation that the training was provided by a Registered Training Organisation
include the relevant course code/s (HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

Should your certificate not clearly include the above information, supporting evidence of the course content may be requested. The evidence of first aid and CPR training may be provided on separate certificates or a combined certificate.

Step 3: Submit your certificates

Upload a copy of your first aid and/or CPR certificate to InPlace as shown below by the due date.

Your first aid and/or CPR certificate must have at least 6 weeks' validity left when you submit it for verification. If your training is due to expire within 6 weeks, your certificate will be rejected. We strongly advise you to arrange renewal of your training prior to submitting your certificates.

UQ Skills first aid and CPR courses

UQ Skills have scheduled first aid and CPR courses on UQ's St Lucia campus throughout 2025.

Training includes:

First aid training: 5 hours of online study and a 4-hour face-to-face workshop
CPR refresher: 2 hours of online study and a 2-hour face-to-face workshop.

External first aid and CPR courses

International first aid certificates

First aid certificates obtained overseas from internationally recognised organisations, are acceptable provided they meet the criteria and assessment requirements of the HLTAID011 (First Aid) course and include the topics listed below. It is the responsibility of the student to provide evidence of the content covered in the course as requested.

apply the principles of first aid
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults and infants
asthma and anaphylaxis management
treatment of infection, shock, fractures, bleeding and burns
emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold, heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
management of common medical emergencies
treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings.

Certificates must be submitted in English. Your certificate/evidence must show that this certification has been issued to your name in English, or they must be officially translated. We will not accept your own translation of the documents.

Regardless of the expiry date on an overseas obtained first aid and/or CPR certificate, the expiry dates will always be as per Australian standards: first aid is valid for 3 years and CPR is valid for 12 months.

*Due to inability to access or receive confirmation from the organisation, St John's Ambulance HONG KONG certifications dated 14th August 2023 or later will no longer be accepted.

Spinal Injury Certificate

Duration and Cost: 2-5 hours, approximately $120-150

PUAEME007 Provide emergency care for suspected spinal injury involves the skills and knowledge required to minimise further injury to a casualty when applying first aid and waiting for emergency medical aid. It includes recognition and management of a suspected spinal injury, immobilising cervical spine, evaluating the need to move a casualty, preparing a casualty for transport, transporting and monitoring a casualty, and performing a casualty handover.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the pre-requisite for this course.

Step 1

Complete the provide emergency care for suspected spinal injury training with an accredited training provider and ensure you obtain a certificate of completion.

Step 2

Upload a copy of your spinal injury certificate to InPlace by the due date.
