Under the Academic Progression Procedure, there are required levels of academic progress you are expected to meet. If your Academic Progress isn’t at the level it should be, you may receive a Progression Alert or Progression Intervention Notice.

We understand there can be many challenges that impact your progress, and we’re here to support you.

This is a great time to engage with UQ support services and your faculty about your studies and any difficulties you may be experiencing.

Keep reading to learn more about:

  • what it means to receive a Progression Alert or Progression Intervention notice and the actions to take now
  • what you need to know as an international student (impacts to your student visa)
  • what is included in the Academic Progression Procedure and how Academic Standing is determined.

For students enrolled in Schedule A programs

If you are a student enrolled in a Schedule A program, you can be identified as not meeting the requirements of the Academic Progression Procedure and your program-specific academic progression requirements.

For students enrolled in Schedule B programs

If you are a student enrolled in a Schedule B program, you can only be identified as not meeting your program-specific academic progression requirements. The requirements of the Academic Progression Procedure will not apply to you.

4. Understanding Academic Progression

We expect students to make steady progress through their courses. This page explains the different levels of Academic Standing.

Study Review Periods

Under the current Academic Progression Procedure, your academic progression is reviewed at the end of each Study Review Period to determine your Academic Standing. There are 2 Study Review Periods in a calendar year:

  • one ending when grades are finalised for Semester 1 (based on an aggregation of all enrolled units during Summer Semester, Semester 1 and Trimester 1)
  • one ending when grades are finalised for Semester 2 (based on an aggregation of all enrolled units during Semester 2, Trimester 2 and Trimester 3).

Academic Standing levels

Academic Standing is determined by the Academic Progression Procedure and describes how you are progressing in your studies. At the end of each Study Review Period, your academic progress is reviewed to determine your Academic Standing.

Your Academic Standing is displayed on your Studies Report but not on an Official Academic Transcript. If you are a domestic student, your QTAC application can be impacted if you do not submit your Progression Improvement Plan after receiving a Progression Intervention Notice, or if your enrolment has been refused.

The current Academic Progression Procedure introduced new Academic Standing levels, which came into effect from Semester 1, 2022 grade release (end of Study Review Period).

When will your Academic Standing level change?

You will be identified as not meeting the required levels of Academic Progress if at the end of a Study Review Period you have:

  • failed at least 50% of the total unit value in courses for which you received a final grade (not including grades of W, withdrawal without academic penalty), or
  • withdrawn (without academic penalty) after census date in accordance with the deadline(s) set in the Enrolment Procedure and Assessment Policy, from all enrolled courses in the current Study Review Period, or
  • received a failing grade for one or more courses in the current Study Review Period, that you have previously failed in the current or any prior Study Review Period(s) within the same or different program of study.

The below table explains how your Academic Standing will change if you do or do not meet the required levels of academic progress.

For study completed before Summer Semester 2021/22

The current Academic Progression Procedure came into effect in Summer Semester 2021/22. For study completed before Summer Semester 2021/22, the four levels of Academic Standing were:

  • good standing
  • academic warning
  • show cause, and
  • satisfactory progression following show cause.

For study completed before Summer Semester 2021/22, students who did not meet the required levels of academic progress would receive an academic warning or show cause notice. This would be issued if:

  • your GPA fell below 3.5, or
  • you failed 50 per cent or more of your enrolled units. A fail is any grade less than 4.
  • If you received an Academic Warning before Summer Semester 2021/22 and wish to return to your studies, you will need to meet the required levels of academic progress or you will be issued a Progression Intervention Notice. Under the current Academic Progression Procedure, an Academic Standing level of Progression Alert is equivalent to Academic Warning.
  • If you received a Show Cause Notice before Summer Semester 2021/22 and wish to return to your studies, you will need to submit a Progression Improvement Plan. Under the current Academic Progression Procedure, an Academic Standing level of Progression Intervention is equivalent to Show Cause.
