Australia’s historic referendum on a Voice to Parliament was decided on Saturday 14 October after a long and polarising debate.

The University acknowledges the stress this has placed on our Indigenous students and staff and their families, many of whom have been actively involved in the campaign.

It is important to be mindful of these impacts and treat one another with respect and consideration, in line with UQ’s values.

Support for Indigenous staff and students

  • Care sessions arranged by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) have been scheduled and information will be shared directly by email from the DVCIE’s office.
  • Special Leave of up to 5 days is available until 22 December 2023 for Indigenous staff, including arrangements for casual staff.
  • The UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit (ATSISU) has spaces at St Lucia and Gatton that are open to staff and students.
  • Students can apply for academic adjustments, including extensions and deferment of assessments or milestones, to support their studies. Email inclusion@uq.edu.au.
  • HDR candidates can also seek accommodations or extensions of progress reviews, and should consider their leave entitlements. Please contact the Graduate School at graduateschool@uq.edu.au to discuss options.

We also acknowledge this has been a difficult time for the broader community. Below are the services and supports available to all staff and students:

  • For staff, UQ’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides free and confidential counselling for all staff and family members. The program is available 24/7.
  • For students, contact the Student Services team or call into Student Central at St Lucia, which will be open on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 October. The team can help you with accessing counselling and can provide advice and study support.
  • UQ Counselling and Crisis Line for students is also available 24/7 on 1300 851 998.
