Why study the Master of Nursing?
This masters degree program is specifically designed for graduates of any Bachelor of Nursing degree to enable them to extend their nursing knowledge and skills in a specialist setting. The Master of Nursing program offers a flexible, external method of study. The program provides the opportunity for students to complete a Master of Nursing, after successful completion of 24 units, a Graduate Diploma in Nursing after 16 units of study or a Graduate Certificate in Nursing after successful completion of 8 units of study. Students are able to select from five fields of study for specialisation, including Children & Young People¿s Health, Primary Health Care Nursing, Chronic Disease Management and Palliative Care, Gastroenterological Nursing, Rural & Remote Nursing, or use the generic Advanced Practice Nursing field tailored to suit your own specialist practice setting. Students who do not currently hold Bachelor of Nursing, or equivalent, may only apply for the Graduate Certificate. When this is successfully completed students may then apply for entrance into the Graduate Diploma or Master of Nursing or Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies programs.
What you can study
The first stage of the three levels of the Master of Nursing; that is the Graduate Certificate consists of one core course Evidence Based Healthcare, two field-specific courses and one elective course. The second stage, the Graduate Diploma, consists of one core course, Education in Nursing and Midwifery Practice, two field specific courses and one elective course. At the Master¿s level of the program you will complete a core leadership and management course, a research focused course and either a research or clinical practice project.
The Masters program consists of 24 units which can be completed in 1.5 years full-time or equivalent part-time. There are possibilities to exit the program at either a Graduate Certificate after 6 months full time or equivalent part-time, or after completion of the Graduate Diploma after 12 months full time or equivalent part-time study. The majority of students opt to undertake the Masters program on a part-time basis to accommodate work and family life commitments.
Credit for prior learning may be given for registered nurses with other previously completed postgraduate study.
