Why study the Bachelors of Music/Education (Secondary)?
The Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education program is tailored specifically for students wishing to pursue a career in music education. This program offers students two years of practical music studies, followed by three years where students take courses relevant to their specialisation in music education. Final Year students have the opportunity to undertake teaching area courses that investigate the 7-12 Music syllabus, instrumental teaching and choral music education. Graduates are thoroughly prepared for the variety of teaching contexts expected of music teachers throughout primary and secondary school.
Honours:
Students in the dual Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Education (Secondary) who are intending on undertaking the Bachelor of Music as an Honours program must apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Music (Honours) / Bachelor of Education (Secondary) dual program following completion of #32 in the Bachelor of Music. Placement courses
Compulsory Placement Course
Students must complete 10 days school experience and 90 days supervised practicum. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.
Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. The Teacher Preparation Programs Handbook provides information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from School of Education.

Honours is not available for this program.

Program rules for the Bachelors of Music/Education (Secondary)
To complete the Bachelors of Music/Education (Secondary)
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Music/Education (Secondary), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain #80 comprising -
#48 from the BMus/BEd(Sec) course list including:
- In Year1, #2 from music techniques (students must sit a diagnostic test with written and aural components to determine which music techniques course they are required to enrol in) and #10 in core studies in music history, practical studies (music performance) and aural skills;
- In Year 2, #14 in music techniques, aural training, and practical studies (music performance) and #2 from music history electives;
- In Years 3 and 4, #16 of core courses and #4 of elective choices as set out in the BMus/BEd(Sec) course list; and
- 16 for Part A; and
- #16 for Part B
