Course description

This course introduces students to the knowledge and skills required of pharmacists. Students gain an understanding of the legal, professional and ethical aspects involved in dispensing and selling medicines and providing counselling and other health-related advice. Students will develop a process for safe and professional dispensing, and gain skills and confidence in communicating with consumers and other health professionals about medicines. Students will gain knowledge and skills in a number of core areas of pharmacy practice, including: assessing evidence and using resources to answer therapeutic questions, use of medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding, nutrition, categorizing and assessing adverse drug reactions and regulation of complementary medicines. The management of a number of common conditions are discussed including: the common cold, allergic rhinitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux and pain.
