Assessment methods

Summative written final assessment, including objective items (Single Best Answer) in orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Discipline knowledge may also be assessed during the course as part of specific workplace-based assessments, including formal clinical assessments and case-based discussions. Summative Clinical Participation Assessment (CPA). Workplace-based assessments (WBAs) within the clinical placement period of the course (including mini-clinical evaluations, clinical skills assessments and direct observation of procedural skills) will allow students to demonstrate achievement of clinical competencies as broadly outlined by the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ).

Course description

The primary goal of this Surgery Specialties course is to allow the students to gain exposure to patients with common and serious Orthopaedic & Ophthalmologic Surgical problems; to learn how patients with these conditions present clinically, to develop history taking and physical examination skills in these particular patient populations, to learn the role of investigations for these patients and to develop an understanding of the treatment principles, both operative and non-operative, for patients with these conditions. To gain the relevant clinical exposure, as much time as possible should be spent in the clinics, on the wards and where feasible, in the operating room. The aim is have students ¿intern ready¿ with respect to diagnosis, investigation, and management including appropriate time for referral with respect to orthopaedic and ophthalmologic conditions.
