Assessment methods
There are two marked assessment items: a Standardised Clinical Scenario (SCS) which is completed
during week 6 of clinical placements, and an MCQ examination completed at the end-of-semester. The
SCS is similar in format to the SCS undertaken in Year 3 Medicine, with greater emphasis on acute/
on-call medical scenarios. The MCQ examination covers common topics within medical specialty areas
with an emphasis on clinical reasoning, intern readiness and safe prescribing.
There are additional hurdle assessment items that must be completed during the semester including:
a Marked Admission completed with the student's supervising clinician; completion of four on-call
shifts; a Medication Communication plan completed with a ward pharmacist; six National Prescribing
(NPS) modules. Students must also demonstrate a satisfactory summative Clinical Participation
Assessment.

Course description
The Medical Specialties course is part of the Advanced Hospital Practice Semester. It includes a six week clinical placement that offers students the opportunity to work and learn as part of a hospital-based specialist medical team within a UQ clinical unit. The primary aims of this course are to build upon the knowledge and experience gained during Year 3 Internal Medicine and to prepare students to practise as interns. Students are expected to act in a pre-intern role, and engage with the common and important clinical problems encountered within an assigned Medical Specialist area, as well as more common medical issues arising within the hospital practice context. They will learn how to apply knowledge and appropriate resources in the diagnosis, management and prevention of a variety of problems. The use of evidence based medicine in accomplishing these goals is essential. Students should use the clinical placement block as an opportunity to enhance skills in history taking, clinical examination and clinical reasoning. Students will also develop and demonstrate safe prescribing skills as well as the skills necessary to approach common ward-call based scenarios.
