Course description

The fourth year core rotation in Paediatrics & Child Health is a clinical immersion. Students are integrated within the hospital and observe and participate in clinical work under supervision. The rotation begins with a half-day video-conferenced orientation program to introduce paediatrics, in particular the clinical approach to children, child development and newborn transition. In addition, students attend twice weekly didactic sessions (e.g. video-conferenced lectures) and access the paediatric online interactive education (POLIE) modules complemented by POLIE face-to-face tutorials which consolidate learning. Students engage in clinical work in various settings, including the emergency department, consultant ward rounds, daily junior staff ward rounds, outpatient clinics, subspecialist clinics, community paediatric visits, newborn nursery and post-natal wards. Students gain experience in emergency medicine, general paediatrics, surgery, community paediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry, radiology, neonatology and the surgical sub-specialties of ENT, ophthalmology and orthopaedics. The timetable and delivery mode of the teaching will depend on whether the student is on rotation in a metropolitan hospital (Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, Greenslopes, Ipswich, Redlands, Wesley), a near-metropolitan hospital (Caboolture, Nambour, Redcliffe, The Prince Charles Hospital), a regional hospital (Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Toowoomba), or an international clinical school (Brunei, IMU, Ochsner Clinic). More complete details are available on the Paediatrics & Child Health Blackboard site. The rotation grade is based on a satisfactory clinical participation assessment, three work-based (mini-CEX) assessments and an examination in the last week of the rotation, which includes multi-choice questions (MCQ) and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) style stations. The Year 4 OSCE also includes paediatric stations.
