Course description

It should be evident to all involved in environmental management that no course can address all relevant issues in this extraordinarily broad field of study and public concern. The EPBC Act 1996 (Australia) defines Environment as including:

Ecosystems and their constituent parts, including people and communities

  • a. natural and physical resources
  • b. the qualities and characteristics of locations, places and areas
  • c. heritage places of value
  • d. the social, economic and cultural aspects of a thing mentioned in paragraph (a), (b), (c) or (d).
Consequently professionals involved in managing environmental issues must be able to acquire, analyse and make decisions based on information, from many diverse sources, if they are to be effective in solving environmental problems. In addition decision-making approaches and processes vary considerably across the world as a reflection of the local cultural and political systems. What is presented in this course is a problem solving methodology that seeks to be transparent in its rationale and applicable to all environmental management issues now and in the future. The insights and skills developed in the course go beyond environmental problem solving to problem solving in general. The course seeks to de-emphasise intuitive, ideologically and values biased decision making by emphasising objective, creative, practical, innovative and enduring approaches. The course does not take an ideological or value laden position beyond an emphasis on evidence based, or in the absence of evidence, adaption based approaches. The course content is dominated by the processes in involved in solving real world problems. Many examples and class discussions are drawn from real situations across the world. Students undertaking this course will need to be committed to engaging in these processes while having some of their existing frameworks for environmental management challenged.
