Course description

Teaching is a multi-faceted profession. Becoming a teacher requires commitment and dedication to lifelong learning and personal growth through reflection. This course introduces school life through workshops and school visits. Observation of practice will enable the opportunity for personal development and growth and practice in the design and implementation of lessons or segments of lessons will feature. Therefore the course focusses on the development of planning for lessons and segments of lessons along with the development of observation skills and understanding the importance of communication in a school context. This course is developmental and will be the basis for the professional experience courses in the Professional Year. This course contains 5 single days during semester and a two-week block following the exam block in a school setting. You are advised to keep this in mind when making holiday plans.

As this course contains a professional experience component in a school it has been permission listed so that academic, pre-service teacher risk assessment and Blue Card status checks can be completed prior to enrolment.

To obtain permission to enrol in this course:

1. Complete and submit the Professional Experience Form when directed

2. Wait for email notification of the outcome of your request

3. If accepted, log-in to mySI-net and add the course to your enrolment as soon as you receive the email or as soon as enrolments open, whichever occurs first.

You will not be added to the list of students requiring a placement until you have added the course to your enrolment, therefore please seek permission as soon as you receive notification that the Professional Experience Preference form is available. Late enrolment (any time up to 4 weeks prior to, or any time after, commencement of the course) may not be accepted.
