Course description
This course will cover patterns of extinctions of animals, threatening processes, and some common methods used in population assessment and conservation of fauna, including the role of museum collections in conservation, detection of rare species, estimating population size and population density, ex-situ conservation and translocations, and the practical field skills necessary to undertake population assessments. We will focus on mammals and birds, but also discuss reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects. Teaching methods will include lectures, computer-based practicals and field work. Students will collect data on both common and threatened mammals and birds in the field at Idalia National Park, and study the translocated populations of the endangered bridled nailtail wallaby at Idalia and Avocet Nature Refuge. After the field trip, students will employ specialist software to analyse their data and write a report on their findings.
