What you can study
Help reclaim and revitalise the rich and diverse Languages of these Lands for future generations by choosing to study a Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalisation (GCILR). This one-year program will provide you with the skills to engage with, support and strengthen Language communities through diverse activities and projects. In a set of on-campus one-week intensives and on-line tutorials, you will study all aspects of language revitalisation practice including: Networking and community building Language and cultural protocols, policies and rights Language teaching and learning Critical linguistic analysis Researching and repurposing archival materials and collections Technology for community language revitalisation. You¿ll also develop your own project design and management skills by developing community-focused language research and resources for use in your own language context. Entry requirements for International students
Prerequisites
- to be an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person*
- a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, or
- completed post-secondary studies plus two years full-time equivalent, relevant professional and/or community experience (see below), or
- five years full-time equivalent, relevant professional and/or community experience (see below).
*Applicants are required to provide evidence of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status. A confirmation of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander status identity under the Common Seal of a community organisation may be provided. Where exceptional circumstances apply, a Statutory Declaration with supporting materials may be considered. Original or certified copies of confirmation documents and/or supporting materials relevant to your identity must be provided. Certified copies must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace (JP).
Visa requirements
International students who wish to undertake this program will not qualify for a Student Visa. To study this program in Australia, international students must hold alternative Australian Visa/Residency status with a sufficient study entitlement. Careers
With the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages Framework firmly embedded in the Australian Curriculum and the UN Decade of Indigenous Languages running till 2032, there is strong demand for qualified Indigenous language revitalisation experts and champions. The UQ Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalisation has been co-designed with key industry, government and community representatives to meet the need for expert practitioners to reclaim, revitalise, and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. Indigenous language revitalisation is a valuable and rewarding field and growing employment opportunities exist for language specialists in a wide range of settings and industries. Across Australia, language teachers are in great demand in early-childhood centres, schools and community learning settings. Language experts are also needed in a growing host of dynamic industries - cultural heritage; the arts and language centres; galleries, libraries archives and museums (GLAM) sector; interpreting and translation services and land and sea management programs. A high-level qualification with industry recognition, the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalisation program also provides a pathway to community-focused and practice-led Higher Degree Research.

To complete the Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalisation
To graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalisation a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
