  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline.

 You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.

1.5 Years 24 Units
  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in education, or
  • a graduate certificate or graduate diploma in education, or
  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, plus 2 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience (see below).

You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.

1 Year 16 Units
  • a bachelor honours degree* (or equivalent) in education, or
  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in education, plus 2 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience (see below).

 You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.

*You must have completed a substantial research project in your Honours degree equivalent to at least one semester of full-time study (or part-time equivalent).

This program provides advanced professionally oriented studies for practising educators, focusing on the professional development needs and in-service requirements of teachers and administrators. Some pathways offer specific qualifications while others offer significant professional advantage to educators interested in career advancement or broadening career options.Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available for Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are commencing in this program.If you are a commencing student and you have been awarded a CSP, UQ Admissions will contact you within a week of you accepting your offer with instructions for how you can then accept your CSP. Additionally, a task will appear in mySI-net that will prompt you to accept your CSP and complete the HECS-HELP eCAF. Please note that, if CSPs are limited, places will be allocated on the basis of academic merit.

Placement courses

Students studying Guidance, Counselling and Careers Field of Study may choose to complete a practicum course, that involves approximately 50 contact hours of practicum experience per course. Enrolment in a practicum course is restricted to students who are registered teachers with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), and holders of a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) or Exemption Card. Students can apply for a Blue Card or Exemption Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. Students may incur costs associated with the practicum (e.g. travel, parking, stationery). Enrolment in a practicum course may extend the length of the program. Educational Studies prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities including learning support teachers, guidance counsellors secondary mathematics teachers, middle years teachers, science teachers and educational administrators. The program also allows students to gain significant professional advantages in advancing their career and broadening their career options.

Professional registration

Graduates may be eligible for registration with the following organisations:

  • Queensland Guidance and Counselling Association

Completion of the degree may not result in graduates receiving automatic registration. Please contact the registration body for details of any conditions for registration.

To complete the Master of Educational Studies

To graduate with a Master of Educational Studies a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
