Why study the Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics?
Applied Linguistics is the study of how languages are used and how they can be analysed, learned, and best be taught. The program is designed around the practical applications of language studies which will improve your understanding of how language works in a wide range of social and professional environments. The Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics prepares graduates to be employable across a range of industries including education, translation, editing, publishing, language data analysis and language technologies.
Please note: due to semester course offerings, it may not be possible to complete a field in the Graduate Certificate full-time in one semester
In 2024 Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are available for Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are commencing in this program. If you are a commencing student and you have been awarded a CSP, UQ Admissions will contact you within a week of you accepting your offer with instructions for how you can then accept your CSP. Additionally, a task will appear in mySI-net that will prompt you to accept your CSP and complete the HECS-HELP eCAF. Please note that, if CSPs are limited, places will be allocated on the basis of academic merit.
What you can study
Students in the TESOL field of study take a number of courses dedicated to issues in teaching English around the world. Those in the Language and Discourse Analysis field of study (from 2023) will take courses covering a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches to language in use. Students also have the option to take a selection of elective courses to tailor the program to their individual learning goals.

To graduate with a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
