  • a Graduate Certificate in Economic Studies from UQ, or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Economics from UQ.

 You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.

  • a Graduate Certificate in Economics from UQ.

Why study the Master of Economics?

Obtaining a higher qualification in economics is a career investment. Students in the Master of Economics receive advanced training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, and have the option to undertake a field of study in health economics, economics and public policy or applied econometrics. The program develops a proficiency in analytical skills, critical thinking, and economic knowledge. Graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in a dynamic and increasingly competitive environment. This program does not presume prior knowledge or training in economics.

What you can study

The program plan for this program can be found here, and includes information on selecting courses relevant to a field of study. This program requires no prior knowledge of economics. You will be given the opportunity to progress to more advanced courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics during the program. Choose a field of study in Health Economics, Economics and Public Policy or Applied Econometrics, or pursue an undeclared field and focus on economic analysis and other specialised areas of economics through a choice of electives. You may like to include a research component within your program, which provides a pathway to research higher degree study.

What you can do with a Master of Economics

Careers

Graduates can expect to find work in government agencies, at the local, state and federal level. A specialised field of study or an undeclared field of study may lead to employment in the private sector, including banks, consultancy companies, utilities, international agencies, insurance companies, marketing, retail and the manufacturing sector, health departments and facilities, pharmaceutical companies, the finance industry, and development agencies.

Program rules for the Master of Economics

To complete the Master of Economics

To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Economics, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

To complete the program, a student must complete 32 units from the MEcon course list comprising -

    (a) 22 units from part A of the list; and
    (b) 10 units from part B of the list.

If exemptions apply for Part A courses, students are to undertake electives from Part B. With Head of School approval, a student may include 2 units for a level 7 course towards part B. Refer to the MEcon (32 units) rules for further information.
