Why study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies?
Expand your theoretical knowledge and professional attributes while gaining the clinical and research skills necessary for a professional career in speech pathology. The profession of speech pathology focusses on the management of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Communication problems may occur in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency (stuttering), hearing or literacy. Through this two year full-time program, you'll complete advanced coursework to develop your understanding of practice and research, while enhancing the effectiveness of your clinical practice as a speech pathologist. You'll learn how to interview, assess, diagnose and treat a variety of clients with communication issues, ranging from speech impairments to problems with voice control, language, fluency, swallowing and eating. Taught by award-winning teachers, researchers and clinical educators who are among the best in Australia, you'll gain the theoretical knowledge, professional attributes and clinical and research skills to confidently pursue a career helping people who have challenges with speech and/or swallowing. You'll develop your prior skills and knowledge to become a lifelong learner and critical thinker, which will enhance the effectiveness of your professional practice.

Placement courses
You will undertake supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals, educational facilities, other health care organisations, private practices and UQ's internal clinics. During placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework and research to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life settings. You will undertake a variety of sessional practical experiences from year one before commencing full time clinical placement blocks during year two. Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses. Prior to applying, applicants should ensure they will be able to meet placement requirements outlined on this website.
Research component
The program incorporates advanced training in clinical reasoning and independent research. Students may opt to undertake a research project in their final year.

Additional costs
- Annual CPR re-certification (approximately $80 per year)
- Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.
- First Aid Certificate (including CPR) (approximately $130 renewed every 3 years)
- A clinical uniform shirt is required and may be purchased through the School.
- Costs for vaccinations and serology are the responsibility of the student and will vary based on individual and program requirements.

To complete the Master of Speech Pathology Studies
To graduate with a Master of Speech Pathology Studies a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
