Entry requirements

Prerequisites

A Bachelor of Physiotherapy with a minimum GPA of 4.0 or equivalent, plus 2 years full-time relevant professional experience and evidence of continuing professional education OR equivalent qualifications and experience.

Additional application information

For applicants who need to provide evidence of English proficiency, please note: this program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum. IELTS minimum 7 in all bands is required.

Students are required to provide proof of immunisation against certain diseases, including Hepatitis B before the commencement of study.

A Senior First Aid Certificate (including CPR) and a Blue Card are also required before the commencement of clinical practice. Further details of these requirements will be provided with offer material.

All successful applicants are required to apply for and gain provisional registration or if applicable, full registration, with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia, which includes the Board's English Language Proficiency requirements. Students must have registration prior to commencing their study and this must be maintained for the duration of the program.

Why study the Master of Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy graduates have the opportunity to undertake the first stage in an ongoing program for clinical physiotherapists working in various fields of special interest.

The program also assists graduates to acquire a knowledge and understanding of advanced clinical skills; to broaden their clinical skills across the field of practice; and critically evaluate and contribute to research in their clinical area.

Professional development in clinical specialty areas and research are major career demands for physiotherapists. Students develop up-to-date knowledge and research skills in the fields of musculoskeletal physiotherapy or sports physiotherapy.

Students undertaking a Master of Physiotherapy in either Musculoskeletal or Sports Physiotherapy could obtain a second masters degree in the alternate area through an additional semester of full-time coursework.

What you can do with a Master of Physiotherapy

Careers

This program offers physiotherapists the opportunity to develop their clinical knowledge and skills in a variety of specialist fields of study. The masters programs in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy are accredited and graduates fulfill requirements for titled membership of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia or Sports Physiotherapy Australia within the Australian Physiotherapy Association.

Graduates are eligible to pursue the final stage training for clinical specialisation within the Australian College of Physiotherapists.

Graduates are well placed for career opportunities and promotion in both the public and private sectors.

To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Physiotherapy, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
