Why study Language Research in Archives?

Language materials are kept in archives across Australia and are important for language renewal and revitalisation. Many collecting places have programs to return materials to community members. However, searching for, accessing and using these materials can pose different challenges. In addition, language materials held in collecting places have different histories of collection and can differ in terms of quality and depth. This course is designed for participants who would like to find, access, review and use materials on their ancestral languages. It recognises the importance of community protocols over language materials. Language Research in Archives is a Shorter Form Credential offered through the School of Languages and Cultures. It is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are involved in and have some knowledge of language revitalisation work in their community. It requires 12 contact hours and approximately 10 independent study hours to complete. In June 2023, this module runs from 26 June to 4 August, including on-campus workshops from 9 to 15 July inclusive. Apply by Saturday, 1 July 2023.

What you can study

Careers

With the introduction of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages Framework in the Australian Curriculum, the development of state and national policies for Languages and UN Decade of Indigenous Languages, right now there is great momentum for First Nations languages. This momentum is growing employment opportunities for language specialists in a range of settings including Language and Culture Centres, schools, early childhood centres, community and government organisations, arts, and land management projects. The UQ team is working with partners in industry and government to ensure the recognition of skills and qualifications in the sector, and advocating to maximise the quality of employment opportunities for language-related work.
