Why study Promoting Positive Student Behaviour in Educational Contexts?
This suite of modules, Promoting Positive Student Behavioural in Educational Contexts, is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop and implement programs that promote positive behaviours in school and manage challenging classroom behaviour. The first module examines student behaviour problems from the individual, group, and system perspectives and teaches theories and strategies designed to change behaviour. This module is critically important for understanding how to manage challenging classroom behaviours, which leads into module two. Strategies for managing challenging classroom behaviour is designed to provide teachers and other educational personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to be able to implement applied behaviour analysis techniques in dealing with students with challenging behaviours. Many of these students have underlying learning difficulties, so their removal from class is detrimental to their academic progress. Students with challenging behaviours need opportunities to learn how to behave and regulate their behaviours so that they can interact more appropriately in class.
What you can study
Create a supportive school environment and a positive school climate by learning theories to manage student behaviour that use a strong behavioural focus and an emphasis on building relationships. This supportive classroom environment is vital, and you will be introduced to students¿ psychological needs in learning and the consequences that can result when these needs are not met. Establishing guidelines for acceptable behaviours and identifying specific rules are key. Cooperative learning approaches are taught, with an emphasis on the importance of fostering interpersonal relationships, as well as strategies to deal with bullying and harassment in schools. Strategies for managing challenging classroom behaviour, whether it be increasing positive behaviours or decreasing inappropriate behaviour, is a focus of this course - as well as the analysis of these behaviours. Behaviour can be increased and decreased, but the technology for ensuring that these desirable changes continue over time and in all appropriate settings is less well established. Generalization is a broad term that refers to the transfer of training across time, new situations, and new behaviours, and understanding generalization will be a focus of the course.
What you can do with a Promoting Positive Student Behaviour in Educational Contexts
Careers
Designed for teachers and other educational personnel (teacher aides, youth workers, pastoral care workers, social workers, speech therapists) these modules will give you the knowledge and skills needed to develop and implement strategies and programs for the promotion of positive behaviours in students. Given that many teachers struggle with the challenges of managing students often with complex mental health and educational issues, these modules will provide insight into how these behaviours can be managed constructively in schools. Graduates have the potential to be employed in different educational settings such as schools, after school care and school camps, where behaviour management programs and strategies are often required.
