Why study Building Resilience and Managing Disasters?
Students should enrol in this module so that they can be introduced to the big ideas, cutting-edge concepts and contemporary theories of disaster management research that exist around the world. Understanding this research can allow them to locate themselves within a genuinely global community of scholarship and practice; help them develop work-related competence in relation to the challenges of resilience building, disaster preparedness, emergency response and recovery; and equip with them the analytical tools to think critically about the disaster management challenges that come across their desk.

Students can study the ideational terrain of disaster management research by examining hazard, vulnerability and resilience paradigms, examine cutting edge concepts and theories relating to rapid reflection, instinctive decision making, institutional adaptation, community resilience and the politics of planning, response and recovery.
