Why study the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology?

Do you have a passion to work in Animal Health and Welfare? In the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology you will study animal handling, welfare and behaviour, clinical aspects of small and large animal health, veterinary surgical nursing principles, and veterinary practice management. As a veterinary technology student you will gain skills in routine laboratory and clinical support procedures including: veterinary radiography and diagnostic practices; anaesthesia; surgery; clinical pathology and pharmacology; nutrition; veterinary therapeutics; and animal reproduction. Students will also develop knowledge and professional skills in animal management, technology and welfare that can be used beyond the clinical setting, e.g. in the regulatory, industry, academic sectors.

What you can study

The first year of the program provides a solid biological science base, along with some discipline specific courses (Professional Studies, Animal Welfare, Behaviour and Handling) that allow immediate immersion in practical and professional aspects of training.
The second year of the program builds on the foundation courses and develops more discipline specific expertise in areas such as animal structure and function, pathology and infectious diseases, animal, biochemistry and animal technology.
The final year offers a series of clinically/professionally focused courses on animal health, medical and surgical practices, research and laboratory skills, animal therapeutics and infection control. During the final semester, you will participate in transition to practice courses and clinical rotations. You will also participate in industry placement programs in locations such as vet clinics, vet hospitals, wildlife parks, government agencies, welfare organisations, animal breeding enterprises and pharmaceutical companies.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology

To complete the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

Students will complete #48 in total, comprising:

  • #20 for Part A;
  • #12 for Part B; and
  • #16 from Part C.
  • Students must complete all courses from Part A, before commencing courses in Part B. No more than #24 of level 1 courses can be included in the program.
