Why study the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)?
The Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) is the University of Queensland's registrable degree program that allows graduates to practise as a veterinarian. Coursework and placement training provide graduates with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to apply medical, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles to companion, domestic, exotic, wildlife, and production animals.
Veterinary science is vital to the study and protection of animal health and welfare. It requires the acquisition and application of scientific knowledge in multiple disciplines and therefore also offers a high quality biomedical training that can be applicable to non-clinical careers, including research.
Veterinarians also play vital roles in protecting human and ecosystems health through principles of One Health practice. Training in trans-boundary diseases and population health are similarly essential to promoting animal productivity and associated industries, and food security.
Prospective students are encouraged to read about the Inherent Requirements expected of a veterinarian and of veterinary students.
What you can study
Studies commence with foundational training in the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition and behaviour of healthy animals with students engaging in clinical training as well as the handling and husbandry of animals. Key concepts are then introduced around the diseased animal, providing detailed knowledge of animal pathology and skills in diagnostic methods, coupled with introductory training in the art of clinical examination and diagnostic process. The 4th year of the program is dedicated medicine and surgery courses for each of the major animal species, including population and public health training. Final year is entirely clinically oriented within University and privately owned practices.
Professional skills training is woven throughout the program in essential competences such as communication, business skills and self-development. Students also undertake Extramural Studies involving work-integrated learning to provide authentic clinical and professional competences and work-readiness.

Students are required to undertake eight (8) weeks of vacation work (in their own time) by the end of their third year of study.

What you can do with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours)
Careers
Graduates from the Bachelor of Veterinary Science are employed as Veterinary Professionals in a number of areas including (but not limited to): Urban and rural private practitioners in Australia and abroad; Consultants on aspects of animal production and disease control; Consultants with federal and state governments dealing with the control of animal disease and the efficiency of animal production; Advisors to industry (especially pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies) and Educators and/or researchers with universities and governments.
In 2019, the School of Veterinary Science achieved accreditation with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for the maximum term of seven years. The AVMA accreditation is recognised internationally as the benchmark for quality in veterinary education.
With the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK) accreditation, graduates can apply to practice in Australia, the UK, North America, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
As a graduate of an AVMA accredited school, students are eligible to sit the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in jurisdictions of the USA and Canada.
