Why study the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences (Honours)?

This program will ignite your interest in the complexities of maintaining an active, healthy human body and allow you to make an essential contribution to wellbeing, rehabilitation and performance. This program focuses on understanding how to enhance human performance, how the body responds to exercise and physical activity,and how to conduct research which could help build healthier communities and stronger athletes.

As a graduate you will be eligible for membership of the professional organisation, Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) and an Accredited Sport Scientist (ASpS)*. This is the only Bachelors degree in Australia to meet Sport Science accreditation requirements by ESSA.

You will study at one of the best human movement and nutrition sciences schools in Australia that is known around the world for its research and expert staff. You will also have access to the latest industry equipment in the School's own specialist biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology and strength conditioning laboratories and health clinics, and UQ's Olympic-standard recreational and sporting facilities.

*Graduates who have completed elective course `Developing the Elite Athlete¿ and practicum under an appropriate supervisor.

What you can study

During this program you will examine all elements of exercise and sport sciences including how the body reacts to acute and chronic physical activity, and the complexities of maintaining an active and healthy body.

In addition to foundation courses in anatomy, physiology and biology, you will complete advanced courses in areas including biomechanics, exercise physiology, health promotion, and motor control. You learn how to deliver exercise and physical activity programs and conduct exercise testing and movement analysis for apparently health people ranging from recreationally active individuals, through to elite athletes.

You may tailor the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences (Honours) towards a specialisation of your choice through your decisions on elective courses and practicum placements - specialised professional areas may include elite athlete development, sports conditioning and performance, clinical measurements or corporate and community health and fitness.

In your final year you will undertake a research project under the guidance of an experienced researcher.

Placement courses

Students will undertake over 400 hours of supervised professional practice in a range of settings that includes sporting academies and institutes, professional sporting teams (e.g. Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Firebirds and Brisbane Roar), hospitals and local government and a variety of health care organisations and fitness facilities.

During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their skills in real life settings.

Students will undertake a variety of sessional professional practical experiences from their first year before commencing their full-time block placement in year 4.

Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Honours

Honours will be awarded to all graduates of this program.

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences (Honours), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
