Why study the Bachelor of Biomedical Science?

This four year program in Biomedical Science capitalises on the research-intensive environment at The University of Queensland to prepare you for careers in the rapidly evolving fields of human health and disease.

Your studies will focus on the human body at the molecular, cellular and whole body levels and the disciplines of biochemistry and cell biology, physiology, developmental biology, microbiology, pharmacology and neuroscience. You will discover the latest in globally relevant biomedical research from leading scientists based at UQ's research institutes and in your fourth year, you will conduct an honours research project within one of these research laboratories or institutes to put your theoretical knowledge into practice.

The program will also provide you with a solid grounding to pursue postgraduate study in medicine and other allied health-related courses.

You will learn the scientific process through activities ranging from experimental design and hands-on experiments to computer programming. You will be equipped with critical thinking, communication, analytical and practical skills required for a career in research science but equally applicable to a wide range of careers in science and beyond.

What you can study

In the first year, you will study chemistry, biology, physics and statistics. These courses provide the foundation for the rest of the Biomedical Science program. In conjunction with these courses, the program offers additional research-focused activities aimed at providing you with the skills needed for biomedical research.

In second and third year, you choose courses depending on your personal interests which will lead you into various specialisations and give you the option to pursue a research project and study abroad. Also in the program's second and third years, you work on projects in research laboratories while on placement. In fourth year, you have the option to pursue Honours, including planning and conducting a full-time research project. The program differs from the BSc (Biomedical Science) in that it is a four year degree with a focus on research.

The courses centre on specialisations in biomedical science, including developmental biology, human genetics, immunology and infectious diseases, molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology and toxicology, and physiology.
