Why study the Bachelor of Human Services?
Human service practitioners help everyday people in need. Professional practice in the human services is complex, challenging and very rewarding because it's about making a real difference in people's lives and building a better world. The Bachelor of Human Services prepares students to work in a range of human service roles with a focus on children and youth, and/or community development. Students will learn about social issues and problems and how they occur, as well as the theory, professional ethics and value base that is the foundation of human service practice. The degree focuses on how best to help people deal with real life difficulties. It is the first step towards a professional career that is exciting and always changing. In order to develop job ready skills and abilities students undertake two professional placements in community-based human service agencies. These work placements help to secure employment for many students and they meet the accreditation guidelines of the AustralianCommunity Workers Association.

Placement courses
Compulsory Placement Course
Students are required to complete work placements that involves 400 hours. Students may incur costs associated with their placements (e.g. travel, parking, stationery). Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base to minimise travel costs and travel time for students. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland.
Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing placement. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the Ipswich office of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and should do so three months before their placement is due to commence.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Human Services
To complete the Bachelor of Human Services
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Human Services, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain #48 comprising:
- #32 compulsory courses from the BHumanServ list; and
- #16 which could consist of one of the following options:
- a major, or
- two minors, or
- one minor and #8 free electives, or
- #16 free electives.
To declare a major, a student must complete #16 in accordance with a major as specified in the list. To declare a minor, a student must complete #8 from a major list, of which no more than #4 may be introductory.
