Why study the Bachelor of Midwifery?
Safely guiding expectant mothers (and parents) through pregnancy, birth and the weeks that follow might be one of the most challenging and rewarding careers there is. Celebrate the very essence of life when you study to become a midwife. The Bachelor of Midwifery is a respected and innovative program developed in consultation with healthcare professionals and key industry partners. It takes a problem-solving approach to learning and integrates lecture-based study with clinical practice in major teaching hospitals.
You will start your practical learning in a hospital in week five of your first year of study. Afterwards, you will start to make the transition from student to midwife during extended placements in your final year. Placements will consolidate your skills and knowledge to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Midwife.
You will benefit from a program that focuses theory on specific case studies, so you can apply everything you¿re learning. Case studies vary, but include women and parents from diverse cultural, linguistic, age and socio-economic groups.
UQ midwives provide professional care, education, support and advice, and play pivotal role in the lives of parents, babies and communities around the world.
What you can study
The program is underpinned by an innovative, problem-based learning curriculum model which has been informed in international best practice by industry experts and responds to current national and global population health challenges.
In the first two years of the program, lectures and problem-based learning are incorporated with clinical experiences in selected partner teaching hospitals and health districts.
In the final year of the program, students undertake extensive preceptored clinical placement providing them with exposure to an area of specialty midwifery practice and the opportunity to consolidate and refine their skills in order to facilitate a smooth transition to graduate practice.

Placement courses
Students will undertake over 1,400 hours^ of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of health care organisations. During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life setting.
^ included in these hours are a number of "follow throughs" that are completed over the duration of the program; this involves accompanying a woman through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.
Students will commence their clinical placements in week five of the program. Over the first two years of the program students will normally complete 15 x 8-hour shifts per semester and in the final year students will complete extended full time clinical placements.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

To complete the Bachelor of Midwifery
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Midwifery, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain #48 from Part A of the BMid course list. Refer to the BMid program rules for further information.
