Why study the Bachelors of Arts, Medicine and Surgery?

The Bachelor of Arts/MBBS program is available to Year 12 applicants only. Domestic students apply for this program via QTAC as part of the School of Medicine's Year 12 MBBS Provisional Entry Sub Quota. International students apply to UQ International and QTAC.

This program produces highly skilled doctors capable of meeting future challenges in a wide variety of careers. The curriculum has been designed with an emphasis on problem-based learning and group work. Students work cooperatively on a carefully planned series of patient-centred problems, each designed to highlight principles and issues in health and disease. Early patient contact and clinical training develop high levels of clinical skills and medical knowledge.

The program's key features include: the simultaneous learning of basic, clinical, biological and social sciences; the improved teaching of communication skills; the use of learning approaches that encourage lifelong learning skills; the incorporation of ethics and professional development as an integral part of the program; and the incorporation of information technology and computing skills to ensure that graduates are able to utilise technological advances to improve their learning skills and knowledge acquisition.

Placement courses

All MBBS students are required to have a Blue Card (The Working with Children Check) issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian by first day of classes in Year 1 of the MBBS program. Students must also have a current Senior First Aid Certificate and provide evidence of immunisation. Students in Years three and four of the MBBS program component undertake clinical rotations within the School's clinical schools (including Rural Clinical School). Students are liable for additional costs associated with attending clinical placements.

Honours

Honours is a modified program of study in year 5 and 6, with entry based on grade point average.

Program rules for the Bachelors of Arts, Medicine and Surgery

To complete the Bachelors of Arts, Medicine and Surgery

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Arts, Medicine and Surgery, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain #96 from the BA and MBBS Lists, comprising -
(a) #32 from the BA List comprising 2 majors or an extended major and BA electives during years 1 and 2 of the dual degree; and
(b) #64 for the MBBS List.

Students must have completed the #32 of the BA component within the first two years and achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.00 prior to commencing the MBBS component of the dual degree. Students who do not maintain a GPA of at least 4.00 and still wish to gain entry into the MBBS will be required to complete the BA (48 units) and then apply for entry into the MBBS.

Domestic students who wish to transfer to the three-year BA during the first two years of the dual degree and who maintain a GPA of at least 4.00 over the three-year BA will retain their provisional direct entry quota place into the MBBS.

All BA majors and double majors currently are available in the BA/MBBS.
