Why study the Bachelor of Nursing?

This innovative program adopts a narrative and inquiry-based approach to learning and integrates lecture-based study with clinical placements in major teaching hospitals. UQ's Bachelor of Nursing is designed to develop graduate nurses who will be able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams to promote quality health outcomes for clients in their care.
What you can study
This program integrates learning via not only traditional lectures and inquiry-based learning groups, but through clinical experiences in a simulated setting at selected teaching hospitals and community health facilities.
In the first four semesters of the programs, you will undertake rostered clinical placement shifts, as well as clinical skills simulation sessions and gain a solid understanding of the basic theoretical concepts of nursing practice across a range of fields of study.
In the fifth semester of the program, you will be introduced to the role of first level practitioner in a speciality area. Here you will have the opportunity to apply and build upon the theoretical concepts learned in previous semesters.
In the final semester of the program, you will consolidate previously learned skills as well as develop new skills to build your confidence through extended clinical placements.

Placement courses
You will undertake up to 880 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of health care organisations. You will have the opportunity during your placements to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life setting.
You will commence your clinical placements in the first semester of the program. Over the first two years of the program you will normally complete multiple shorter placements involving 8-hour shifts and in the final year you will complete extended full time clinical placements.

Applications for credit based on a Diploma of Nursing
Upon receiving an offer into the program, an application for credit may be lodged if evidence is provided of current AHPRA registration as an Enrolled Nurse and completion of one of following qualifications within 10 years prior to admission to the program:
- HLT54115 - Diploma of Nursing (Release 1)
- HLT51612 - Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled-Division 2 nursing) (Release 1)
English Language Requirements
You must have attended and satisfactorily completed at least 6 years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English. At least two years of this education must have been between grades 7 and 12. This education must have been completed in one of the following countries:

Additional costs
- Annual CPR re-certification (approximately $80 per year)
- Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.
- First Aid Certificate (including CPR) (approximately $130 renewed every 3 years)
- Police check for criminal history ($45)
- A clinical uniform shirt is required and may be purchased through the School.
- Costs for vaccinations and serology are the responsibility of the student and will vary based on individual and program requirements.

To complete the Bachelor of Nursing
To graduate with a Bachelor of Nursing a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
